Summary of Role:

Capula are looking for experienced Lead Engineers in Protection Systems with proven skills and track record in the UK Transmission and Distribution System. The successful candidate will, as part of a broader Protection and Control team, be responsible for the design and implementation of Protection Systems that are for clients across the UK Transmission and Distribution sector.

As an established Lead Engineer in Protection Systems, it is expected you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of Protection Systems, the Transmission & Distribution sector, applicable standards and technologies required.

The right candidate will have strong technical leadership skills, have experience of mentoring & coaching others, be a capable of analysing problems and developing fit for purpose solutions, as well as being an excellent communicator both to internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technically Lead and drive a project team delivering protection solutions.
  • Mentor and coach Engineers within the protection discipline to aid the development.
  • Support the Project Manager in identification of change, programme (schedule), cost etc
  • Support the project team to ensure risks are proactively identified, assessed and managed to avoid adverse impacts on the project.
  • Lead the design process including chairing design review meetings and working with the wider team to ensure a compliant system is provided meeting client and regulatory standards.
  • Collaboratively lead and work across discipline to ensure successful project delivery and client delight.
  • Develop SLD, KLD’s and Concept Level Designs to support solution development and ensure that project / client requirements are fulfilled, including the identification of the most suitable technology for the application.
  • Undertake site visits / non-intrusive surveys as required to support the tendering team in technical matters, as part of the design activities or as part of site implementation support.
  • Produce and review technical documentation to support the design, development and delivery of systems.
  • Produce and review protection designs including schematics drawings and lead wider design development with engineers from our hardware discipline and contractors.
  • Lead the production of Protection settings and configuration of solutions.
  • Where required assist with the Type Registration of solutions, helping to ensure compliance to National Grids Specifications
  • Be responsible for the effective delivery of the assigned tasks and project deliverables to time, quality and budget.
  • Provide Technical input and feedback for sales and tendering of projects.

Candidate Profile:

  • Have a good understanding and keen interest in the UK Transmission and Distribution Systems and Protection Relay Technology across one or more of the key vendors GE, Siemens, SEL, ABB.
  • Have a working knowledge of IEC61850 and how to implement this within the field.

  • Have excellent communication skills.
  • Be flexible in methods of working to achieve best outcomes.
  • Successfully completed technical degree (Bachelor, Master, Diploma) or a comparable qualification with relevant experience.
  • Full UK drivers’ licence and willingness to travel.
  • Good knowledge of the relevant National Grid standards and policies are desirable but not essential.
