Capula has been awarded the contract to deliver a protection and control solution to Europe’s first of a kind test centre for National Grid Electricity Transmission.
Capula will design, supply, install, test and commission all Protection & Control (P&C) and SCADA systems for National Grid Electricity Transmission’s Deeside Centre for Innovation.
Deeside Centre for Innovation is the first test facility in Europe – where assets associated with electricity networks can be tested off-grid, 24 hours, seven days a week – ultimately supporting the extension of the operational life of ageing assets and accelerating innovation.
The test facilities have been designed to allow research and development of new, unconventional technologies and working practices to be tested by National Grid Electricity Transmission and its wider supply chain and stakeholders; including academia, Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), energy suppliers and product manufacturers.
Following a series of collaborative engagements with National Grid Electricity Transmission’s Innovation Team, Capula has been subcontracted by AMEY to deliver a full turnkey, cyber secure protection and control solution. At its core will be the introduction of new protection solutions supported by Software Defined Networking (SDN) capabilities – achieving greater resilience, system interoperability and an innovative approach to power system protection.
Commenting on the project Martin Payne, Transmission & Distribution Business Manager, Capula said, “We have worked with National Grid for more than 25 years, supporting a number of business critical projects, and are proud to be a part of this ‘first of a kind’ innovation project”.
