This year’s challenge ‘Sent into Space’ saw teams using cutting-edge high altitude balloon technology to design and engineer their creation making it suitable to launch into space. The students were required to track its journey and document the whole process, using GoPro cameras and presenting video and pictures of the flight.

Leanne Barrow, Capula’s Resource Planner and school liaison for this competition said: “In addition to the challenge, the students performed an experiment to see if they could create art in space. Using test tubes filled with paint they successfully created a unique masterpiece.

We were so proud to see Painsley scoop two of the awards and are currently making plans to showcase the winning photo in our office canteen as it is such an inspirational image that shows the wonders of engineering”.

Commenting further on their achievements Steve Tellwright, Capula HR Director, said “We are always looking at ways in which we can inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers from the local area, and this competition is such a great way to interact and give something back to our local community and particularly the young people who take part.

We are pleased to say that we have in fact recruited two apprentice junior engineers - Tayela Jarvis-Dale and Dominika Karpinska - who have previously taken part in the challenge”.

Organised by KMF Group, a local engineering company, this is the fourth year Capula has sponsored the initiative and the third year we have sponsored Painsley which so far has seen over 25,500 pupils and 60 companies taking part since its launch in 2012.
