International Women's Day Spotlight - Meet Maha Mosallam

We talked to Maha about her experiences as a female engineer at Capula, here's what she said:

What inspired you to pursue a career in your field?

I pursued Electrical Engineering because I wanted to challenge stereotypes and be part of an industry that shapes the future. I’ve always been curious about how things work and enjoy problem-solving and innovation. Seeing other women succeed in STEAM roles motivated me to push forward. It wasn’t always easy, but I wanted to challenge myself, make an impact and contribute to a more diverse and inclusive engineering industry.

What do you enjoy most about working at Capula?

It’s difficult to pick just one thing, as there are so many aspects that I love about working at Capula. I enjoy the collaborative environment, where challenges turn into valuable learning experiences and every day brings something new.

The company offers a great platform for professional growth and the people here are truly a treasure. Everyone understands the importance of work-life balance and is always supportive. It’s a brilliant environment to be a part of.

What advice would you give to women looking to thrive in this sector?

First and foremost, believe in yourself! It can be tough at times, but trust in your abilities - you’ve got this! Find mentors who can guide you and give you the inside scoop. Also, never stop learning - there’s always something new to pick up, whether it’s through formal training or just hands-on experience.

Building a strong network of supportive people is key too. Surround yourself with others who can help lift you up, share advice and empower you on your journey. And don’t let the stereotypes get to you - be the one to break them!

Lastly, remember to take care of yourself. It’s all about growing both personally and professionally.

Do you think there is a glass ceiling in engineering?

Yes, many people believe there is still a glass ceiling in Engineering, particularly for women and other underrepresented groups.

While the industry has made progress in recent years, there are still challenges like gender biases, fewer women in leadership positions, and limited opportunities for career advancement. However, many organisations like Capula are actively working to break down these barriers by promoting equity, diversity and inclusion and encouraging women to pursue leadership roles.

What's your top tip for a great career?

For a great career, my top tip would be to stay curious and adaptable. The world is always changing and being open to learning new things will keep you ahead of the curve.

Building a strong network is also essential; relationships with colleagues and industry peers can provide guidance and help you advance. Lastly, don’t be afraid to take risks and embrace challenges; those are often the times you’ll learn the most and grow.
